Getting started
Install crux
What you need, and how to put crux on your Windows computer.
What you need
- A Windows computer. crux runs on Windows only.
- A Claude subscription of your own. crux works through Claude Code, the official Claude app for your computer, signed in with your account. See Claude Code and your sign-in.
- A crux license key, or a card to buy one during setup. See Your license key.
- An internet connection during setup. crux downloads the document tools it needs (for Word, PDF and Excel files) the first time.
Install it
- Run the crux setup file you downloaded (its name starts with
Crux-Setup). - If Windows warns that the app is from an unknown publisher, click More info, then Run anyway.
- On Welcome to crux, click Install crux. There is nothing to choose.
- On Add your license key, type or paste the key from your receipt, then click Continue. No key yet? Click Buy crux. See Buying during setup.
- Installing crux takes a couple of minutes. Keep the window open until it says crux is ready.
- Click Open crux. The setup wizard starts.
Buying during setup
- Click Buy crux on the license screen.
- Choose a plan, then click Continue to payment. A secure payment page opens in your browser.
- Pay in the browser. When the payment goes through, the setup window shows Thank you. Here is your key.
- Click Copy and keep the key somewhere safe. You need it to move crux to another computer later.
- Click Continue to install.
Tip: If the payment page closes or times out after you paid, your key is still on the payment page in your browser. Copy it from there and paste it on the license screen.
Updating later
You do not need to run the setup file again. crux checks for updates on its own and installs them when you quit, or when you click Restart now. See Updates.
Removing crux
Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows and uninstall crux. Your bid folders are your own files and stay where they are, and crux keeps its own data on the computer (your company details, rates and settings) in case you install it again. To take everything to another computer, make a backup first: see Backup.
